137 Anonymous Origianl Stereocard Photograph. "Castle Garden, New York."
Boston, Massachusetts Perry Mason & Co. No Binding Collectible-Fine Book
circa.1870s. "Youth's Companion." Unnumbered stereograph on yellow board (3 1/2 x 7 inch) with title under the right photo. Overhead view of the Emigrant Landing Depot for New York showing the building complex with the harbor in the background. First known as the West Battery at the tip of Manhattan Island, it was decommissioned in 1824 by the U.S. Army and turned into a center for public gatherings and serving as a promenade / beer garden / public gathering place / theatre till 1855. From 1855 to 1890 it was the Emigrant Landing Depot for New York and served as the processing facility (the nation's first) for between eight and ten million immigrants. In 1890 the federal government took over the role of processing immigrants and constructed Ellis Island which replaced 'Castle Garden'. From 1896 to 1941 it was the site of the New York City Aquarium. It was closed by Robert Moses, the powerful park commissioner, in an attempt to build a traffic bridge to Brooklyn, but the public outcry gave him one of his rare defeats. Now known as Castle Clinton, an early name, it is administered by the National Park Service and is the departure point for Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Fine clean image of this historic place.
