Author's first book. 172 pages; photos; illustrated brown cloth with design on the cover in black. Soiling to the spine, missing piece (1 1/2 x 1/ 1/2 inch) from the upper right corner on the front flyleaf. This is the author's first book and is quite rare. Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1946) was a British composer of classical music. The book is an account of his early conducting engagement for the musical play "The Gaiety Girl" which took him around the world with a musical comedy troupe going from America (New York & eastern states, Pittsburgh, San Francisco), the Pacific, Australia, and the voyage home. Very good clean copy of this poorly made book.

4 x 5 inches. On back of a flyer advertising his work. Odoardo Barri was the stage name of Edward Slater (born circa 1840--d. 1920). Barri was a music composer, teacher and singer. After success in Italy and Spain, he opened a music school in London and ran it for 50 years. He is credited with over 1500 compositions. This short letter, dated May 31, 1888, sets up a meeting with an unidentified woman.

Inscribed and signed by both at the bottom of the photo " To Dorothy de Maria with happiest memories, Ethel Bartlett and Rae Robertson". Ethel Bartlett (1896-1978) and Rae Robertson (1893-1956) were a duet team of piano players from England who traveled the world playing a piano duet for 30 years. They both taught at the Matthay School of Music in England and arranged and published two-piano music. They were one of the reasons two-piano playing became popular during the first half of the 20th century. Very good clean copy of the photograph.

Morgan (1810-1896) was a merchant sailor, solder and businessman and a Union General in the Civil War. After the war, Morgan returned to Quincy Illinois to spend the rest of his life a s a banker and businessman. This copy has a few dampstains and light foxing.

Author's inscription "Best wishes - Victor Borge" on front flypaper, also includes a ticket stub from a performance of Mr. Borge's at Chabot College on October 13, 1984. Victor Borge (1909-2000) was a Danish and American comedian and musician. His comedy act included many musical elements. This volume is a humorous look at the lives of many great composers.

circa.1959. An original publicity photograph (8 1/8 x 10 1/8 inch). Inscription mid-way up the left side of the photo "To Dorothy de Faria with sincere appreciation & best wishes Mario Braggiotti." Image of Braggiotti posed seated looking forward with his arm tucked under his chin. Lower right hand code 'NY4262'. Mario Braggiotti (1905-1996) was an American pianist, composer and raconteur raised in New England, though born in Italy. He studied in Paris under Alfred Cortot & Isider Philippe before meeting George Gershwin to whom he became a friend and mentor. With Jacques Fray forming a duo he traveled Europe introducing 'Rhapsody in blue' which became Braggiotti's signature piece. During the 1930s he toured the United States with Fray and appeared on CBS radio mixing classical and modern music. After the war he did a solo act and was a member of the 'Big Band Hall of Fame'. Very good clean copy of the photograph with inscription.

Original publisher's cloth binding, dust wrapper, and slipcase. Book measures 7 1/4" x 9 1/4"; slipcase measures 7 1/2" x 9 3/4." Ninety-six pages, complete. Eight plates and several black and white illustrations by Pogany, complete. Pages, covers, and dust wrapper are very clean and undamaged. Binding is tight. Slipcase is lightly worn. On one of the front endpapers is an owner inscription dated to 1937. Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) was an English poet. Willy Pogany (1882-1955) was a prolific Hungarian illustrator best-known for his pen and ink drawings in children's books. Sonnets from the Portuguese is a collection of love sonnets originally written by Browning around 1845-1846 and first published in 1850.

A child prodigy, he traveled about Europe and the United States giving concerts and eventually settling part time near Boston. Very good clean copy of the photograph.
