Swanberg, W.A.
Collection of 25 Typed Letters Signed.
Typed letters signed by W. A. Swanberg to Robert Young, Jr, (25 letters with envelopes) and 28 carbon copies of letters sent by Young to Swanberg constituting an ongoing correspondence between them from 1976 to 1988. W.A. Swanberg (1907-1992) was an American biographer of note, writing biographies of William Hearst, Theodore Drieser, Joseph Pulitzer, Henry Luce, and Norman Thomas. The biography of Henry Luce (1972) won the Pulitzer Prize and his work on Norman Thomas (1976) won the National Book Award. Robert Young, Jr. (1926- ) is also a biographer and man of letters who has authored books on Henry Miller and Fatty Arbuckle and written widely on literary subjects. Swanberg's letters were written during the latter part of his professional career and into his years of relative retirement. He writes about reviews that he is receiving on his history of the Whitney family, telling Young that since his biography on Luce, he has been unable to get good reviews or manuscripts accepted by publishers controlled by the "Luce Empire". Swanberg agonizes over finding another subect for a biography, mentions E.H. Harriman, saying that his health no longer allows him to travel as much to do the research required for major figures. He mentions the publishing industry emphasis on sensationalism and S-E-X, pointing out that if the subject didn't have any scandals involved in their life no one is interested. Swanberg during this period keeps active writing book reviews and short articles. In the correspondence he encourages Young to carry on with the life of William Winter (1836-1917), noted American drama critic and ancestor of Young. Included also is a two page analysis of how Young might revise the early chapters of his manuscript, emphasizing "lean writing" to get the reader off to a good start. Swanberg and Young also share stories about facing the infirmities brought on by the aging process and downsizing of homes to condos. Condition: Fine. Biography, Literauture, William R. Hearst, W.A. Swanberg. DK-14 (Book ID 9675) $600.00
