Bowen, Catherine Drinker  Typed Letters Signed (six)
Six letters, six pages, to Frederick Hard dated 1958-67, from Bryn Mawr and Haverford, Pa. Typed personal letterhead paper from 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 to 7 1/4 x 10 1/2. (Also two related letters and one pamphlet by Ms. Bowen.) Catherine Drinker Bowen (1897-1973) was a writer and lecturer best known for her biographies of Justice Holmes, John Adams, Francis Bacon, etc. Dr. Frederick Hard (b. 1897) at the time of the writing of most of these letters by Ms. Bowen was the President of Scripps College, Claremont, California. The context of the letters is Ms. Bowen accepting or having to turn down speaking engagements at Scripps College. As a friend of Dr. Hard and his wife, Ms. Bowen not only addresses the invitations to speak, but also discusses her books, her writing plans, and her love of the fiddle. Specific letters are -- April 25, 1958, Ms. Bowen writes that she hopes to see Dr. Hard while he is on the East Coast; December 10, 1960, Ms. Bowen tells Dr. Hard she will bring her fiddle with her on her next speaking engagement; January 7, 1961, Ms. Bowen says she seems to be thinking a lot about money lately; June 6, 1962, she writes about lectures at Redlands, Occidental, Stanford, and Rutgers; March, 1967, she writes that she has to forego lectures to work on her books ... continues to play the fiddle as a hobby; May 17, 1967, she turns down offer at being "writer in residence at Santa Cruz" to concentrate on writing books. The two related letters are -- Sept. 22, 1961, Bill Coberly writes Dr. Hard thanking him for the pamphlet, "The Nature of the Artist", by Ms. Bowen (pamphlet included); May 26, 1967, Dr. Hard writes Ms. Bowen about the marriage of his son (carbon copy of original). Ms. Bowen's 19-page pamphlet, "The Nature of the Artist", was published in 1961 by Scripps College and was printed by The Ward Ritchie Press. Pamphlet contained her address delivered at building dedication ceremonies at the college April 27, 1961. Ms. Bowen's remarks centered on the importance of music and the arts in our lives. She relates anecdotes from famous writers, composers, authors, etc., about music, and she asks the question -- "What is the motivation that lies behind most art?" What propels the artist to his work?" She notes: "Your great artist looks on his talent as a responsibility laid on him by God, or perhaps a curse set on him by the devil".   Author. Writer.
