1959. Autograph signed letter, front and back, on Van Wyck Brooks stationary (4 1/2 x 7 inch) with envelope (4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch) dated April 15, 1959. Van Wyck Brooks (1886-1963) was an American literary critic and biographer during the first half of the 20th century. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his book THE FLOWERING OF NEW ENGLAND, 1815-1865 (1936). The letter is a response to Robert Young Jr. (1927- ) in which Brooks declines to read a manuscript sent by Young as his policy is, reqretfully, is to read only his manuscripts as he has a great deal of reading to do for his work. Young's manuscript is a biography of theater critic William Winter (1836-1917). Fine clean copy with evidence of a fold in the letter, also included is the envelope with canceled stamp. This was the senior yearbook for Herb Caen's graduating class. Caen went to fame as a 'three dot" columnist for both The San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Examiner. His graduation picture is on page 57 and description of his activities is on page 80 "Literary Courses - Review Staff, French Club (photo pp141), Baseball, Sacramento Union School Page, Double S (photo pp136), Chess and Checkers, News Editor - X-Ray (photo pp110)". On page 202 in 'Favorite Expressions' is a quote "Also known as 'Able' utters 'doggone the luck anyhow'" and on pages 204-205 in 'Prophecy' is a story of Caen in a New York jail for hitting his mother with a stove. Herb Caen (1916-1997) won a special 1996 Pullitzer Prize for his long contribution to San Francisco journalism Also of note in the yearbook is Thomas MacBride (photo page39) who became a member of the Calfiornia Legislature 1955-60 and a federal judge since 1961. He presided over the Lynette 'Squeeky' Fromme trial for the attempted assassination of President Gerald Ford. Signed by many class members, but alas not Caen or MacBride. Condition: Fine.
