Letter deals with property owned by L.T. Berliner of Corry, Pa. who wants to sell his property for $10,000, but the Treasury Dept wants to pay less. Arthur L. Bates (1859-1934) served Pennsylvania in the 26th & 25th congressional districts from 1901 to 1913. He attended Oxford University in 1882-83 and practiced law in Meadville, Pa. He was in the newspaper publishing business from 1899 on. Served as a delgate to the International Peace Conference at Brussels in 1905 and Rome in 1911. Active in the Republican Party of Pennsylvania. Letter has been folded in thirds with a rust mark from a paper clip in the upper right hand corner. Condition: Very Good. In this amusing and good naturedl letter Bigelow writes to Badeau about Badeau's upcoming wedding, his second, wishing the couple happiness and success, says he is not sure he can make the ceremony and "welcomes the future Mrs. Badeau to the ranks." Halleck, attorney at law, and W.E.P. Hartnell. ... Browne was the only shorthand reporter in California, at that time and for this work he recieved $10,000." The Spanish translation was printed in 1851, by S.W. Benedict and contains only the proclamation of the Governor, the proceedings at the Convention, the list of delgates, and as an appendix, the Constitution. Most famous for his notorious "General Order No. 28" which declared that any women who showed disrespect to any officer or soldier of the Union would be declared a protitute.After nine months as administrator of New Orleans he was replaced and sent to the eastern war theatre where he earned the disgust of Grant and was finally relieved after the election of 1864. Leonard, M.D. Dr. Leonard has apparently asked Camp to speak to the San Francisco chapter of the American Legion on Camp's role in the national organization's founding. Camp declines, but fills in quite a few memories: (in part) "I was a delegate with the 1st Division contingent, and if my memory is correct, it was this contingent--on the way to Park from Coblenz--that decided to suggest the name 'American Legion', and to recommend this name to the Paris meeting." Camp (1893=1975) was a professor of paleontology at U.C. Berkeley and an expert in western American history.
