Two engraved frontispieces, two folding maps, 1 folding plan. Modern quarter leather binding. Some internal ex-libarary marks: Two small stamps on first title page, professional repair to second title page; blind stamp page 1; pages 101 library name excised affecting the top of a few letters, but still readable. (A letter authorizing Creighton Library to sell this book is enclosed). Howell, Catalog 50, item 137: "" Kotzebue's second Pacific voyage, made eight years after the first, combined scientific exploration and discovery with conveying cargo to Kamchatka. The voyage was also intented to protect the Russian American Company from the fur poaching of foreign traders. Kotzebue spent the winter of 1824 in California and Hawaii; he provides an extensive account of Ft. Ross as well as a description of the San Francisco area. He also visited Brazil, Chile, the Society Islands, Pitcairn, Micronesia and Alaska. " This German edition is a much expanded version of the first edition, which was published in Russia in 1828. The library markings do not extend to the plates, which are fine and unblemished. Kotzebue's first voyage, published in Germany in 1821, is Zamorano 80, no. 48. Early California History.
