circa.1880s. Large (7 x 4 1/2 inch) sterecard. The Scott County Soldiers Monument on Main Street in Davenport, Iowa was built through donations of private citizens to honor soldiers of Scott County who died in the Civil War. The Monument was designed by R.F. Carter of South Rydate, Vermont and dedicated on July 4, 1881. The monument is fiftly feet tall with an eight foot tall sculpture of a Civil War infantryman at its top. The stereocard photo shows the monument soon after it's completion. Condition: Very Good. Numa Blanc, Fils. Cannes. Original photograph (5 x 8 1/4 inch) with trimmed corners and lower left corner bent and evidence of having been glued in a frame. Subject's name in pencil written on the back. Louis Philippe Albert d'Orleans (Comte de Paris) (1838-1894) claimant of the French throne became heir apparent to the French throne on the death of his father in 1842. Educated in England after the overthrow of his grandfather in 1848, Louise Philippe. During the Amerivcan Civil War he served on the staff of General George B. McClellan for a short while in 1862, before returning to France. In 1883 after the death of Henri, Comte de Chambord, grandson of Charles X, he was recognized as the head of the royal house of France, uniting the claims of the older and younger line of the house of Bourbon. Underwood & Underwood. New York, New York. circa.1900. Original stereograph on tan board (7 x 3 1/2 inch) with title on the front cover. Image of some children playing in front of a monument with the Lee Mansion in the background. Lee's Mansion was seized in 1861 to serve as a graveyard for northern troops duing the Civil War by Gen Montgomery Meigs, who hated southerners. Graves were placed up to the front door and in the Rose Garden. In 1882 George Lee, son of Robert E. Lee sued the federal government and won $150,000 for the mansion and 1,100 acres surrounding the mansion. During 1925 the mansion was restored and transferred to the National Park Service in 1933, though the cemetery stayed under the control of the US Army. Fine clean copy. Condition: Fine. Robert E. Illustrated by Engraved By W.T. Bather.. Engraving from a photograph, circa 1900s (4 1/4 x 5 3/4 inch) of Edward Hastings Ripley (1839-1915) from Vermont, seated in civilian clothing. Joined the Vermont Volunteers as a private, rising rapidly to a colonel in 1863 serving in the Pennsular campaigns, in the Carolinas, and back to Virginia and as General took over command of Richmond and re-establish order which he did to much admiration and note. Engraving, circa 1900s (4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch oval) of Benjamin Butler (1818-1893), in civilian clothing. In 1862 as a Major General he was made military governor of New Orleans. Most famous for the hanging of William Mumford, for removing the U.S. flag from the local mint; issuing the "Woman Order" regarding the women of New Orleans making them fair game and his confiscation of $800,000 from the Dutch consel (later returned). An incompetent general with political influence he gained command of the Army of the James, but was removed by Grant for his blundering failures. Engraving, circa 1900s (4 1/4 x 6 inch) of Benjamin F. Tracy (1830-1915), in civlian clothing, from New York. Was a lawyer and early organizer of the Republican Party he joined the Civil War in 1863 and was in the Army of the Potomac and in the Battle of the Wilderness won the Medal of Honor. He was made a General before retiring. After the war he returned to the field of law and became U.S. districk attorney for the Eastern District of New York. He was famous for cracking down on the whiskey trade taxes and created a new tax code. Defended Beecher against Tilton in 1875, and decided the famous "Elevated Railroad Case" while a judge. He served Under President Harrison as Navy Secretary and played a role in the reorganization of the modern navy and was a early advocate of the civil service reform. Condition: Very Good. Trained as a lawyer he joined the Union forces in 1861 and served in the 1st Michgan Artillery fighting at McIntire's Ford, Capture of Knoxville and Cumberland Gap, Corinth, and Sherman's March. He served as the wartime editor of the Richmond "Examiner". Engraving, circa 1900s (3 3/4 x 5 1/4 inch) of George B. McClellan (1826-1885), in military uniform. Graduate of West Point, cited in the Mexican-American War for bravery, and a gifted observer of military organization in Europe, McClellan resigned in 1857. As a vice-president for the Illinois Central RR he became acquainted with Lincoln. He took command the Dept. of Ohio as Major General for the Republic and was given command of the armies around Washington and succeeded Genreal Scott as Commander in Charge of the Army. With marked success he undertook the complex task of organizing and trading the Union armies. However he was relutant to attack and after Antietam when McClellan delayed in pursuing Lee, Lincoln removed him. He ran for President in 1864 and lost. Served as aide-de-camp under General Grant and was a close friend. Porter was a noted eloquent speaker and after Grant left the Presidencey went to work with the Pullman Car Company and other railway firms. Engraving from a photograph, circa 1880s (4 5 3/4 inch) of John A. Logan (1826-1886) from Kentucky/Illinois in civilian clothing. Joined the Union forces at Bull Run and then organized the 31st Illinois infantry and became its colonel. After suffering serious wounds in the end of 1861 he returned to the field and was made a brigadier-general of volunteers by Grant. Served under Grant in the Mississippi campaign, first to enter Vicksburg. In 1864 served as one of Sherman's generals in his march to Geogia and is said to have saved the battle at Atlanta. Commanded the Army of Tennessee after Gen. McPherson's death and was present at the taking of Savanah. After the war he returned to congress and was one of the managers of Johnson's impeachment. In 1871 became a senator from Illinois. Famous for many speeches given in the House and Senate. He published THE GREAT CONSPIRACY (1886) about the Civil War. Three times he was promoted for distinguished gallantry, the las to grevet-brigadier-general in 1865. Wounded in the right hand and his left arm shattered at the battle of Prairie Grove, 7 Dec. 1862. Engraving, circa 1900s (4 x 5 1/2 inch) of Rufus Pratt Lincoln (1841-1900) of Massachusetts in civilian clothing. Lincoln joined the war in 1862, after graduating from Amherst College, with the Massachusetts Volunteers rising to captain in several months. He fought at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, and the assault on Petersburg. By 1864 he reached the rank of brevetted lieutenant-colonel for meritorious services. After the war he returned to college and became a doctor after graduating from Harvard in 1868. He became a famous doctor specializing in diseases of the throat, lungs, and nose. Stationed on the west coast during the Mexican-American War, resigned to enter banking, and then returned to the military in 1860 as a colonel. In 1861 made a brigadier-general after loosing 300 men at Bull Run and transfered to Kentucky. After run-ins with the press and fueds with the administration while showing signs of emotional instablity he distingusihed himself at Shiloh. 1862 he became a major-general under Grant and began the career that made him famous. He took command of the western army after Grant left and in 1864 organized and lead the Atlanta camgaign which was followed by his March through Georgia and the Carolina campaigns. During this period he gained the repetation has a gifted commander and strategist. He became a Liet. General in 1866 and a full general in 1869 and succeeded Grant as the Commander in Charge of the Army which he held for 14 years till retirement. Two "Extra" issues of the Sonoma County Journal from June 16 and June 22, 1861 were discovered.
