Original carte de visite photograph. 3 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches. No photographer, place or date. Tom Thumb (real name Charles Sherwood Stratton) was an American drarf exhibited by the promoter P.T. Barnum. In 1863 he married Lavinia Warren (real name Mercy Lavinia Bump). The photograph, which dates from the time of the marriage, shows Mr. and Mrs. Thumb with the best man and bride's maid, standing facing the camera and wearing formal clothes. Condition: Very Good. circa.1930. Publicity photo (5 x 7 inches) of he upper body looking up. Dorotony Mackaill (1903-1990) was a british actress who ran away from home to be on the stage in London. Eventurally moving to New York and joining the Ziegfield Follies, and then on to Hollywood in the 1920s. She was a WAMPAS Baby Strar in 1924. Her most famous movie was THE MAN WHO CAME BACK with George O'Brien. Mackaill's career survived the change to talkies, but retired in 1937, later did some TV work. Condition: Fine. "Fibber McGee and Molly" was a long running and much loved radio program that was on the air from 1935 to 1952. The character of Fibber McGee was played by Jim Jordan (1896-1988) and the part of Molly McGee was played by his wife Marian Jordan (1898-1961). They were married in 1918. circa 1925. Publicity photo (5 x 7 inch) of his upper body with hands folded and printed signature across the bottom. Aged 10-12 in the photo, Jackie Coogan (1914-1984) was the most famous child actor in the silent films making over four million dollars in such films as THE KID (1921) and OLIVER TWIST (1922) and from the extensive advertising during the 1920s. He was famous for his pageboy haircut, oversize overalls and cap. His mother and step-father went through his money and Jackie had to sue them, only getting $126,000. This led to the famous California Child Actors Bill which forced the studios to set aside 15% of the child actors income. During hard times Charlie Chaplan helped him out with money. In WWII Jackie flew glidders in Burma. Later in life he became famous for his role of Uncle Fester in the TV show THE ADAMS FAMILY and various guest roles. He retired in the 1970s. Condition: Fine. Publicity photo (5 x 7 inch) of Sills sitting, b/w, during the 1920s with printed signature. Milton Sills (1882-1930) was a stage and film actor from Chicago. From a wealthy family he first became a professor at the University of Chicago and then in 1905 became a stage actor. Starred in a dozen plays on Broadway between 1908 and 1912. In 1914 he starred in "The Pit" an instant hit and began acting full time in silent films as a freelance actor starring opposite many of the leading actresses of the time including Gloria Swanson. His most famous and sucessful movie was "The Sea Hawk" (1924). Along with 36 other leading actors of Hollywood he helped found The Academy of Movie Pictures Arts and Sciences in 1927. Sills last silent film was THE SEA WOLF (1930). Tho he made several early talking pictures his career was cut short by a heart attack playing tennis. Sills has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. During WWII his company won an army contract for the OQ-2 Radioplane of which there were 15,000 made. After the war he sold the company to Northrop. His last role was in 1967 on BATMAN. Jackie Saunders [Anna Jackal] (1892-1954) was a silent film actress and a major star at Balboa Films, an independent studio in Long Beach known for its innovations in film making. From 1913 to 1918 on 11 acres it was the largest independent film company outside of Hollywood. Fox Pictures and Pathe were their distributors. Jackie Saunders was their leading star and this small pamphlet has photos from some of the films she starred in - 'Sunny Jane'; 'A Bit of Kindling'; 'Bab the Fixer'; 'Reaping the Whirlwind'; 'The Checkmate'; 'Jackie the Hoyden'; and 'Ill Starred Babbie'. Collection of Original Letters Describing Their Marriages to the Actor Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle
Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle (b. 1887--d. 1933) was a silent movie comedian who achieved star status before his career was derailed by his connection to a sex scandal in the 1920's. His first wife, Minta Durfee Arbuckle (b. 1889--d. 1975) was a star in silent film comedies (1914-16) playing opposite Charlie Chaplin. She was married to Arbuckle from 1908 to 1918, when they separated. They were divorced in 1925. Addie Sheldon (b. 1905--d. 2003) was Fatty Arbuckle's third wife and was married to him from 1932 until his death. Sheldon was a Hollywood movie actress, using the stage name Addie MacPhail, from 1925 to her retirement in 1940. The collection of letters is written to Robert Young, Jr., an author who was working on a biography of Arbuckle, whifch was published in 1994. Summary of the collection: Minta Durfee Arbuckle. 17 letters (11 typed letters signed, 6 autograph letters signed. 33 total pages. Also: Photocopy of tape recorded recollections of her marriage to Fatty Arbuckle. 214 pages. The letters and tape recording were done in 1958, while Young was under contract with the literary agent Carleton Cole to work with Minta to produce a biography of Arbuckle. This project eventually fell through. The letters refer frequently to the tape recording and Minta uses them to emphasize points, make corrections and answer Young's questions. Addie Sheldon. 27 autograph letters (31pages) signed and six page typescript prepared by Young and corrected in holograph by Sheldon. In her letters Sheldon provides Young with information about the last two years of Arbuckle's life. In the process, even though it has been over 60 years and Sheldon is in her early 90's, she possesses a sound mind and a great memory. Robert Young. The collection also contains Young's own retained photocopies of the letters he has written to both Minta and Addie. These letters show the effort and scholarship Young put into his biography of Arbuckle, which was published by the Greenwood Press in their "Bio-Bibliography" series. Condition: Fine. Two letters, Los Angeles (2 pages) and Philadelphia (8 pages), 1905, 4 x 7". Ms. Bates (1873-1941) was an American operatic and stage actress, her roles ranging from the serious to popular. She worked in productions by Augustin Daly, David Belasco and others. These letters are to Mrs. Fielding Stilson, daughter of American drama critic William Winter (1836-1917). In the first letter, on stationery of the Van Nuys Hotel, she cancels an evening engagement, writing, "I'm a wreck - head like the devil - and feeling rotten"... In the longer letter from Philadelphia (stamped envelope included), she writes that her play "Darling" has closed and that only Belasco knows what her next role will be. Conner, Bellew's good friend and the copyright holder of this book to the actress Viola Allen ("Miss Viola Allen, compliments, Frank A. Conner") on the front pastedown.
