Robert Riviere & Son Ltd..  London, England.  Printed circa 1930. xix, 312 pages; frontportrait; frontportrait; three-quarter leather binding (binding by Riviere) with gilt lettering and tooling to the spine, raised bands; top gilt edging, former owner's bookplate 'Alexander F. Jenkins'. Reprinting of Lord Chesterfields' famous letters to his son Philip Stanhope covering the period 1739-1765. This collection of letters, first published in 1774, became the 'manual of practical morality' and etiquette for fashoning the manners of ambitious youths during the latter part of the eigthteenth century in England. At this later date the volume has become an insightful view into the code of conduct and the habits of thought of a great nobleman during the regin of George II. The letters are a pleasure to read. These essays originally appeared in Harper's Magazine in Curtis's column "Easy Chair" and are on (as the preface says) "vital questions of hygiene, courtesy and morality."
