Autograph Document Signed. "Jessie Slack vs. Andrew Spear." 
Two signed documents from Windsor County, Vermont 1785 dealing with "Jessie Slack vs. Andrew Spear". The first manuscript (4 x 6 1/2 inch) dated June 28, 1784 states that Andrew Spear agrees to pay Jeesie Slack six pounds in the form of wheat. It is signed by Spear. The second document (7 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch) dated May 12th 1785 the Constable of Reading, Vermont is ordered to summon Spear to Court for nonpayment of his debt. It is signed by Briant Brown, clerk. Also signing on the backside by David Davis, attesting to the fact that he has left a copy of the summons with Spear. New York City, New York.  1798.  One page autograph letter (8 1/4 x 10 inch) with tape repair. At the bottom is the company signature of Morris and Ludlum and addressed to J. Delamontange of New York City, dated January 12, 1798. Morris and Ludlum write J. Delamontange and instruct him to contact a Mr Moore and collect on the bill that he owes Morris and Ludlum (Delamontange likely lives in Albany, New York).   Condition: Very Good.  Law, New York City. Lucas Morgan orders the sheriff of Hampshire County or the constables of South Hadley to satisfy the claim of James Doane of South Hadley against Elisha North ("a yeoman') of the same city. The claim is for $6.58. The law official are to seize property to cover the amount owed or to imprison North until the claim is satisfied. Manuscript Document: Sacramento City Land Sale, 1853 
8 x 12 1/2 inches. Some darkining along bottom of document. Ourside wrapper with some splitting at old folds. In this manuscript, Melvin H. Giles signs that he has sold Lot 8 in as block bounded by 8th & 9th at G and H Streets in the City of Sacramento, to John Nash, William Lewis and William Woodruff. Signing the document as witnesses are J.H. McKune and E.B. Crocker. Crocker signs the document a second time as notary public. W.S. Long, recorder of Sacramento County, signs that the deed has been recorded. John H. McCune (d. 1905) was the first Sacramento County Attorney (1850) and later a State Assembleyman and Judge. E.B. Crocker (b. 1818--d. 1875) was the brother of Charles Crocker at the legal counsel for the Central Pacific Railroad. His art collection formed the basis of what today is the Crocker Art Musuem. This block is now the site of the Sacramento County Courthouse (formally known as the Gordon D. New York.  1818.  One leaf written front and back. 8 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches. A letter, signed by Jonathan Lawrence, sent to two guardians of 11 wards informing them that the Supreme Court is going to appoint three counselors to oversee the partition of "land and principle" to which they are party. The three counselors are all residents of Chenanga County. On the back is a note signed by Lawrence giving evidence that the notice has been sent. Albany, NY.  1803.  One leaf, written front and back. 4 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Embossed paper seal on front, left, center. The New York Supreme Court orders the Sheriff of Albany, NY to collect $54.46 from Christian Truax to satisfy a claim against him by Philip Haigle. Issued by "Fairlie and Bloodgood, Clerks" and signed on both the front and back by Peter E. Elemendorf, attorney. Comment on back "Not found." Roswell Weston, an attorney, brings uite agains Daniel Beswick of Boston, Washington Co., New York for an unpaid debt of $50.00. Signed by Weston and noted as filed. In the second document, Micajah Pettit, a judge of the Court of Common Pleas for the County of Washington, signed that Beswick has been 'delivered to bail." New York Supreme Court. Samuel Givens Vs. Joseph Ketchum. Manuscript Document Signed By Henry Loucks, Attorney for Defendent. 
New York State.  1818.  One leaf, written front and back. 8 x 12 1/2 inches. Henry Loucks submits a statement on behalf of his client joseph ketchum (defendent) directed at James Givens (plantiff). Loucks says that the defendent can provide evidence that he does not owe Given's the money Given is demanding. Loucks adds a second part to his statement, which is addressed to Derick B. Stockholm, plantiff's attorney, stating that it is actually Given who owes Ketchum money and that if Given does happen to win his suit, the only befefit he will receive is a discount balance due from Ketchum.   Condition: Fine.  BL-3  (Book ID 12322)  $25.00

Sullivan County, NY.  1819.  Two leaves, three written pages. 7 3/4 x 9 1/2. In the first document, the New York Supreme Court order the under-Sheriff of Sullivan Co., NY to arrest Oliver Wheaton, Jr. on charges of tgrespassing and also due to a $2000 claim against him by Balls and Messenger. A note is attached. signed by Elisha Heacock, under-Sheriff, stating that he has arrested Wheaton. In the second document, which is two parts, Wheaton signs at the top that he has been arrested. Witnessed and signed y Jacob Weeken, commissioner. At the bottom, Livingston Billings, attorney for Wheaton asks that thecase be set aside due to "irregularities" in costs. Edinburgh, Scotland.  1793.  "Memorandum for Sir John Nisbet's Attorney at New York," by an unknown hand. 2 1/2 holograph pages (7 1/4 x 12 inchs) dated 1793. The background of this memorandum is that John Edgar, 'Accountant for Excise' has brought a suit against the late Sir John Nisbet and his brother Alexander before Lord Henderland in Edinburgh. The author of the memorandum believes that a Walter Ruthfurd of New Jersey has information relating to Sir John Nisbet's wife that is relative to the suit being brought against the Nisbets. He further believes that Rutherfurd is in possession of 'partial counsel,' is not an objective witness. The author instructs Nisbet's New York attorney how to interrogate Rutherfurd and how to bring him before the Federal Court in New York to solicit testimony favorable to the Nisbet's case. Four inch repair using Document repair tape to reinforce it. Ingersoll of Tompkins, Ithaca County, New York sells a lot in the town of Lodi (Lot No. 46), New York to Margaret LeConte of Lodi for $500.00. Signed by both James and Mary Ingersoll. On the back of the document Judge John Ingersoll signs as a witness. Also signed by C.D. Hanks, Seneca County Dep. Clerk, stating that the document has been recorded. Oliver Wendell Holmes (1841-1935) American jurist, appointed to the Supreme Court in 1902 and serving to 1932. Most famous for his dissenting opinions. Steel Engraving Portrait. "Benjamin Franklin Tracy" 
Engraving, circa 1900s (4 1/4 x 6 inch) of Benjamin F. Tracy (1830-1915), in civlian clothing, from New York. Was a lawyer and early organizer of the Republican Party he joined the Civil War in 1863 and was in the Army of the Potomac and in the Battle of the Wilderness won the Medal of Honor. He was made a General before retiring. After the war he returned to the field of law and became U.S. districk attorney for the Eastern District of New York. He was famous for cracking down on the whiskey trade taxes and created a new tax code. Defended Beecher against Tilton in 1875, and decided the famous "Elevated Railroad Case" while a judge. He served Under President Harrison as Navy Secretary and played a role in the reorganization of the modern navy and was a early advocate of the civil service reform.   Condition: Very Good.  Civil War Veteran, Medal of Honor Winner, Republican Party. Engraving, circa 1900s (4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch) of Cyrus Dustan Roys (1836-1915) of Michigan in civilian clothing. Trained as a lawyer he joined the Union forces in 1861 and served in the 1st Michgan Artillery fighting at McIntire's Ford, Capture of Knoxville and Cumberland Gap, Corinth, and Sherman's March. He was on the staff of General Saunders. After the war he became a corporate lawyer and general councel, mainly with railroads in the Chicago area.   Condition: Very Good.  Civil War Veteran. Copy of the famous New York - Tammany Hall lawsuit by the people who had given bribery money to N.Y. Alderman Michael Duffy. Duffy tried to hide the money and refused to return it. He had the money and property transfered to his wife Mary, who in this affidavit claims to know almost nothing about it. A reprint of a late 18th century book in which John Baxter, convicted of a series of crimes, gives tips to law-abiding citizens on how to avoid being robbed and cheated. New London County, Connecticut.  1828.  2 pages (6 1/2 x 9 inch) one side printed, the other in ink, signed by Denison Palmer, Justice of the Peace and others. Denison Palmer signs a writ requesting the sheriff of New London county to summon Moses Palmer to appear before Chester Smith, Justice of the Peace. Palmer apparently owes the defunt firm of Ansel and Asher Coates ten dollars. Also signed by A.P. Brown as a witness. Signed on the back by David Baldwin, Deputy Sheriff, that the writ has been served. Also signed on the back by Chester Smith that Palmer has failed to appear and that his in default of the judgement against him. (Denison Palmer, 1781-1842, was from an old Storington, Conn family. Abbott, Nathan  Autograph Letter Signed 
1883.  Autograph letter signed (5 1/2 x 8 3/4 inch) 3 pages, on Thomas and Abbott stationary, and dated September 7, 1883, Boston, Mass. 1/3 of the last page below Abbotts signature is torn off. The letter is to a Mrs. Greenhalge about settling her father's estate, including finding a buyer for the patents to her father's inventions. Nathan Abbott (1854-1941) recieved his law degree from Boston University in 1881. He later taught at Michigan (1891-92) and Northwestern (1892-94) he went on to become the founding dean of the Stanford University Law School.   Condition: Very Good.  Lawyers, Standford University Law School Dean. Ex Officina Hackiana.  1624.  LATIN LANGUAGE. 720 pages; bound in full leather, wear to the corners, top and bottom of the spine and damage across the bottom of the back board (removed leather, 1 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch). An account of the 'Gunpowder Plot of 1605', a failed assassination attempt on King James I of England in October/November 1605. Carried out by English Catholics led by Robert Catesby, it was a plan to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament with the King in attendance. Catesby was shot and killed, eight others were tortured, tried, hanged, drawn & quartered. The suppression of the plot is still celebrated to the present by 'Bonfire Night' in Engand on the 5th of November.   Condition: Very Good.  Gunpowder Plot, English History, King James I. First Edition of the Hammond contribution, four volumes bound in 2 volumes with raised bands and gilt lettering on the spine; full leather binding (4 x 6 inch). Both front and back joints of both volumes cracked but holding. I: xxxi, 847 pages. II: vii, 807 pages. III: v, 618 pages. IV: v, 659 pages. Blackstone's 'Commentaries on the Laws of England' was the leading authority on the development of English common law, since they were readable and a handy guide to common law tradition. The played a leading role in the education and practice of law anywhere the English settled, especially Canada and the United States. This edition, with commentary by William G. Hammond was intended for American lawyers. Hammond was Dean of the St. Louis Law School and a lecturer of the history of law at Boston University, University of Michigan and the State University of Iowa. New Gardens, Whitby, York County, England..  1887.  "Extracted" (copied) Probate and Will of William Booth (18 x 26 inch) with one seal. Dated 4 March, 1887. William Booth (died 8 June 1887), a farmer, leaves his widow and family an estate valued at eleven hundred fifty-eight pounds. The estate includes china, books, prints and pictures. An accompany document signed by H.A. Hudson, district registrar, attests to the value of the estate and that the will has been registered. Zamorano Eighty #11 - "... contains the proceedings of the convention held at Colton Hall in Monterey, California ... which debated and adopted the California Constitution of 1849. In the volume also appear the proclamation of Governor Riley recommending the formation of a state consitution ... a list of the delegates who attended, the memorial to the federal congress requesting the admission of California into the Union, and and a translation and digest of such portions of the Mexican laws of March 20th and May 23rd, 1837. ... with an introduction and notes to the latter by J. Halleck, attorney at law, and W.E.P. Hartnell. ... Browne was the only shorthand reporter in California, at that time and for this work he recieved $10,000." The Spanish translation was printed in 1851, by S.W. Benedict and contains only the proclamation of the Governor, the proceedings at the Convention, the list of delgates, and as an appendix, the Constitution. Butler, Benjamin Franklin  Manuscript Document Signed. 
Albany, New York.  1819.  Benjamin Franklin Butler (b. 1795, d. 1858) was Attorney General of the United States, 1833-38 and Secretary of War, 1836-37) under President Andrew Jackson. His rapid rise to influence earlier included a partnership in the law office of Martin Van Buren in Albany as well as a number of judicial and rlected positions. Later in his career he also received judicial appointments from Presidents Van Buren and James Polk. In this doucment ("Benjamin F. Butler vs. Anahiah Payne") Butler files a complaint before the New York Supreme Court against Payne to collect not only on a $345 promissory note owed to him by Payne but also on other debts Payne owes him totaling $800. Chandler, John  Autograph Document Signed. "John Chandler v. Nathaniel Muzzy." 
1785.  Autograph document, two sided, signed (8 1/2 x 13 inch) dealing with the case "John Chaldler vs. Nathaniel Muzzy" in Windsor County, Vermont and dated 1785. In the document, Daniel Heald, the Justice of Peace orders the Constable of Chester to arrest Nathaniel Muzzey and bring him to court or attach property sufficient to pay a claim of 300 pounds which John Chandler has filed against him for non-payment on a land sale. On the backside Thomas Camp signs that he has arrested Mussy and recieved bail from him. I. Griffin and L.M. Bradley, lawyers, have also signed the document arguing as to the accuracy of the claim. Dankiel Heald (1739-1833) settled in Chester in 1776, having earlier fought as a soldier in the battle of Concord Bridge and Ticonderoga. He served as town clerk in Chester for 25 years and was in the state legislature for 13 years. John & Joshua agree to sell to Joseph Covert 68 acres in the town of Ovid (Lot 48) for $540.00. Also signed by Cornelius Humfrey, (Judge - Court of Common Pleas). The document has been repaired with tape across the middle. Davis, John W.  Typed Letter Signed 
1926.  John William Davis (1873 - 1955) was the Democratic candidate for President in 1924. Born in Virginia, he had previously served in the House of Representatives (1911-13), was U. S. Solicitor General (1913-18), and Ambassador to Great Britain (1918-21). In this one sentence letter, written to Fielding Stillson (newspaper reporter, developer of the Angelino Heights section of Los Angeles and a Davis supporter in the `1924 election) Davis expresses sympathy for the death of Stillson's son William Winter Stillton). Ely, John  Autograph Document Signed. "John Ely V. Jabez Baldwin." 
1785.  Two autograph documents signed in Windsor County and dated 1785 dealing with the case "John Ely v. Jabez Baldwin (7 3/4 x 10 1/8 inch) and a 'true' copy of a bill (7 3/4 x 7 1/2 inch). The document orders the Sheriff to serve a summons on Jabez Baldwin (the executor of the estate of John Baldwin) to appear in court for non-payment of a bill for 41 pounds served some 20 years earlier (1765). On the back Benjamin Wait attests that he has served the summons. Benjamin Wait (1736-1822) servied in both the French & Indian War in which he was captured at Fort Oswego (1757) and fought in the Revoluntionary War under Ethan Allen with the Green Mountain Boys at Fort Ticonderoga &1775). Achieving the rank of Colonel in the Vermont Militia, he was also an earlier settler in Windsor County (1767) and founded the village of Waitsfield, Vermont (1789). Gile, Ephraim  Autograph Document Signed. "Ephraim Gile v. John Thurston." 
Two autograph documents signed dealing with the case "Ephraim Gile vs. John Thurston" in Windsor County, Vermont and dated 1782 & 1785. The first document (3 1/4 x 8 1/2 inch) is an agreement by John Thurston to pay Thomas Chandler 30 pounds for "value recieved" in Chester, Vermont and dated 1782. It is signed by John Thurston and witnessed by Elijah Parker and Oliver Atwood. The second doument orders the Constable of Chester to arrest Thurston and bring him to court. Signed by Daniel Heald, Justice of the Peace. Thomas Camp, the constable, attests on the backside that he has "attached the body" of Thurston and also William Atwood. At some point Giles becomes the 'owner' of Thurston's debt to Chandler. Daniel heald (1739-1833) fought in the battle of Concord Bridge and Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War and later was a member of the state legislature for 13 years. Elijah Parker (1740-1804) also gave patriotic service during the war.Some foxing along the edges.   Condition: Very Good.  Law, Windsor County, Vermont, Revolutionary War.
