Steel Engraving Portrait. "Rufus Pratt Lincoln" 
Engraving, circa 1900s (4 x 5 1/2 inch) of Rufus Pratt Lincoln (1841-1900) of Massachusetts in civilian clothing. Lincoln joined the war in 1862, after graduating from Amherst College, with the Massachusetts Volunteers rising to captain in several months. He fought at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, and the assault on Petersburg. By 1864 he reached the rank of brevetted lieutenant-colonel for meritorious services. After the war he returned to college and became a doctor after graduating from Harvard in 1868. The town was founded in 1886 along the mainline of the Northern Pacific Railway over the Cascade Mts through Stampede Pass. The Large Sanatarium at one time had over 160 patients with 2 doctors under the supervision of Dr. J.S. Kloeber. It contained nice suites, bowling alleys and pool tables along with the natural springs. The Sanatorium burned down in about 1912 and the area around it is now a ghost town. Spine sunned, lightly chipped at head, tight, foxing to portrait, signed in pencil at end of introductory biographical sketch, "James T. Fields". The portrait is newly engraved from the folio published in 1686. Sir Thomas Brown was born in London in 1605 and died in 1682. His "celebrated treatise" went through many printings and was a masterpiece. Dr. David Day (1825-1896) was born in Virginia. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1849 and moved to Minnesota in the same year. He practiced medicine in St. Paul and late was in the drug business (1849-1866). He served in the State Legislature in 1852 and 1853.
