Donald O'Connor (1925-2003) broke into films in the late 1930s playing a teenager and had a major role in the GLORIA JEAN MUSICALS during the 1940s. In 1949 he landed the lead in the FRANCES series (seven in all), but missed the role opposite Bing Crosby in WHITE CHRISTMAS because of an illness caught from the mule in the movie. His most famous role was SINGING IN THE RAIN for which he won a Golden Globe award. In the 50s and 60s he guest starred on TV and his last film was RAGTIME (1981) with Cagney and O'Brien. circa.1930. Publicity photo (5 x 7 inch) head shot with printed signature across the bottom. Helen Kane (1903-1966) was a singer and comedienne known as the 'Bopp-Boop-a-Doop Girl'.Along with Clara Bow she was the protoype for Betty Boop. Sued Paramount Pictures over the rights for $250,000, lost. By the age of 15 she was traveling with the Marx Bros on vaudeville and in 1927 while on broadway sang "That's My Weakness Now" adding "Boop-boop-a-doop" to it setting off a craze in her coquettish voice. By 1928 whe was making five thousand a week in Hammerstein's "Good Boy" and made 22 recordings between 1928-30. During the early 1930s she made seven movies in which she didn't have the lead role but usually had top or near top billing. With the end of the flapper age she fell out of favor. circa.1950. Publicity photo (4 1/4 x 6 1/8 inch) in b/w. Lena Horne (b.1917) was an african-american singer/actress most famous for the song "Stormy Weather". Was in the chorus line at the Cotton Club in 1933 along with singing at night clubs and with bands. MGM signed her in 1942 and had her in the film PANAMA HATTIE singing 'Stormy Weather' and later CABIN IN THE SKY (1943). Due to state laws forbidding interracial relationships on the screen she had her roles cut from films and so the studio had problems using her in films. During the 1950s she was blacklisted because of her civil rights activity. 1960s through 1980s she worked nighclubs and TV along with issuing records and winning several grammys. Signed with Warner Bros and first major film was BATTLE CRY (1955). In 1957 issued a hit song "Young Love", #1 for six weeks so Jack Warner created Warner Records record label to cover him. In 1958 starred in DAMN YANKEES, his most succesful movie. Had a show on TV for a year known as "Tab Hunter Show". By the 1960s he fell out of favor and moved to Southern France and did a string of "B" pictures in America and Europe. Has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Condition: Fine. Music-Division, 17th Floor, Tribune-Tower.. 12 page memeograph with paper title; stapled (8 1/2 x 11 inch). Series of song lyrics for the campaign - among them: 'Our Campaign Hymn, The Volunteers'; 'He's Going Over'; 'Fight for Landon'; 'He'll Be Sittin' in the White House'; 'Three Long Years'; 'Tyranny Will Never Rule'; 'Come Ye Sons'; 'Vote for Landon'; 'Illinois Volunteers'; 'Landon'; 'Come Along'. In these songs the later stanzas are worded to include the names Landon and Knox and campaign phrases. Very unusual campaign ephemera from the 1936 Presidential Campaign between Roosevelt and Landon which is usually thrown away after such a landslide election result. Seems to have been produced on the 17th Floor of the Tribune-Tower in Chicago, Illinois by the Music Division of the Volunteers. Very good copy with no marks.
