15 Printed Legal Brief. "The State of California vs. Fred Bose." (Lewd and Lascivious Conduct with a Child Under the Age of Fourteen.) Petition for a Hearing of the Case in the Supreme Court. Sacramento, 1915.
Sacramento, CA 1915 Soft cover Very Good Book
Original publisher's gray wrapper. December 1915. 7" x 10." Thirty-four pages, complete. A clean copy. The petition, jointly submitted by the state and the attorney for Fred Bose, describes Bose's conviction of child molestation in a Sacramento County court, his sentence to ten years in a Folsom prison, and his request for a new trial denied by the Third District Court of Appeals. The petition asks for a new trial before the Supreme Court. The alleged incident for which Bose ("an older man") was convicted took place on a park bench outside of an amusement park in Oak Park, Sacramento in the summer of 1914. The incident involved a twelve-year-old girl. Some testimony and summary of the testimony from the original trial are included. Both the state and Bose's attorney, R. P. Talbot, argue for a new trial because they believe the young girl's accusations are "improbable," that the jury acted out of "passion and prejudice," and that both judges and the prosecuting attorney were guilty of incompetence and misconduct.

16 Printed Legal Brief. "The State of California vs. Thomas L. Knight." (Lewd and Lascicious Acts Committed upon a Child Under the Age of Fourteen Years.) Respondent's Brief. San Francisco, 1923.
Sacramento, CA 1923 Soft cover Very Good Book
Original publisher's gray wrapper. March 1923. 7" x 10." Sixteen pages, complete. A clean copy. This brief filed by the State Attorney General in the District Court of Appeal describes Thomas L. Knight's conviction for child molestation in San Francisco Superior Court and argues against his appeal. Knight, age 57, had been convicted of molesting a nine-year-old neighborhood girl in his basement on 20th Street in San Francisco. This molestation is briefly described. Knight's appeal is that during his first trial, the testimony of two other girls, who also claimed to have been molested, prejudiced the jury against him. He felt these testimonies should not have been allowed because they implied a disposition on his part towards such behavior. The state, citing legal precedents, argues that the testimony of the two other girls established Knight's intent to molest and the preconceived design of his action. The state also argues there is enough additional evidence against Knight that even without the testimony of the two other girls, the jury would have convicted him anyway.
