1883 No Binding Collectible-Very Good Book 
Autograph letter signed (5 1/2 x 8 3/4 inch) 3 pages, on Thomas and Abbott stationary, and dated September 7, 1883, Boston, Mass. 1/3 of the last page below Abbott's signature is torn off. The letter is to a Mrs. Greenhalge about settling her father's estate, including finding a buyer for the patents to her father's inventions. Nathan Abbott (1854-1941) received his law degree from Boston University in 1881. He later taught at Michigan (1891-92) and Northwestern (1892-94). He went on to become the founding dean of the Stanford University Law School.

Under "Adultery", punishment for the offense is described as follows: "whoever shall commit Adultery with a Married Woman or on Betrothed to another Man, both of them shall be severely Punished, by Whipping on the naked Body, and stigmatized or Burnt on the fore-head with the letter A on a hot Iron" . Interesting and very good clean copy.

Autograph Document Signed in sullivan County, New York, dated 29 October 1819. 8 pages (7 3/4 x 12 1/2 inch) written in ink. The document consists of two affidavits, one signed by Livingston Billings, attorney for Jubal Terbell, and one signed by Jubal Terbell. The affidavits are in regard to a title dispute Terbell is having over property (Lot 14 in the '1st Division' of Sullivan County) with Wm. W. Sackett and Sackett's attorney, Patrick G. Hildreth. Also signed twice by Jacob Weekes, Commissioner, as witness. Noted as filed. Fine clean copy.

Smith, etc. [from a suit made in Schenectady Co., NY]. Note on the bottom that John W. Smith has already paid $298.00. Signed on the back for the Sheriff of Rensseaer County, that suit has been served (signature is difficult to read). fine clean copy.

1840 No Binding Collectible-Fine Book 
Writ of Inquisition signed by 12 Jurors and Sheriff P.C. Hitchcock. Two pages on one leaf, partially printed (8 x 13 inch). In this two part document the New York Supreme Court orders the Sheriff of Washington County in the case of "Samuel Smith vs John E. Newcomb and Jonathan Stevens" to hold an Inquisition to ascertain the level of damage due to the plaintiff. The jury comes to the amount of $85.24.On the bottom of the writ is signed by: John C. Bishop, David Burdick, William Semle, Elijah Champman, John H. Clements, Samuel Y Johns, F.L. Spencer, Henry Weeks, David Hitchcock, George Wells, _____ Graves, and Joseph Allen. The document is also signed by Sheriff P.C. Hitchcock and Attorney B.F. Agan (twice by each). The document is likely a separate page from a larger document. Fine clean copy.

In this document, a print form filled out and signed by Livingston Billings, Meeker seeks to collect on a six hundred dollar loan which Daniel Perry owes Timothy Perry and which Timothy Perry has endorsed over to Meeker. The document is signed twice by Billings, an attorney acting on Meeker's behalf. Also noted as 'filed'. Fine clean copy.

Rensselaer County, New York 1819 No Binding Collectible-Fine Book 
Manuscript document filed for the Plaintiffs, dated 1819, 2 pages (1 leaf, front & back) 7 3/4 x 12 1/2 inch. In this legal comment the Bank of Lansing burgh seeks repayment of a $1,500.00 loan from David Russell. With (?) earlier indebtedness and damages the total sought is $2,000.00 The document is partially handwritten, and partially a response to information required by a printed form. It is noted on the back as a copy and filed. David Abel russell (1780-1861), later a U.S. Congressman from new York (1833-41). Fine clean copy.

Boston, Mass 1781 No Binding Collectible-Fine Book 
Pages 171-174. Resolves LX-LXX (8 1/2 x 12 1/2 inch) printed on both sides. [see Evans - SHORT TITLE, for examples of how "Resolves" were printed as individual pages and runs of pages]. these resolves of the Massachusetts General Court (State Legislature) show the nature of issues taken up by the General Court during the last part of the American War of Independence (1775-1882). Issues are both domestic and war related. One resolve is "for limiting the stock to be kept on . the Elizabeth Islands." Another awards funds to the Thomas Pier for the care of his son who has been "wounded and scalped by the Indians.". Resolves that are war related include one that recomputes the value of the SLOOP TOWNSEND which was sold into government service for the war, but which was paid for with devalued currency. Another resolve grants funds to the John Austin for his work as "Keeper of the powderhouse of Charlestown." Fine clean copy.

Signed twice by Beebe and also by Peter Beekman as Witness of Beebe's giving notice. Third signature difficult to distinguish. Noted as "filed". Fine clean copy folded.
