1 Carbon Typescript of Catholic Hymns Translated from English to Salish, Spokane Kalispel Language
(Spokane, WA) Soft cover Very Good Book
Produced at St. Michael's Mission, Spokane, Washington. Forty five hymns written using English Alphabet and other symbols to capture the phonetic sounds of the language (Salish) of the Spokane Kalispel Indians. No date, but circa 1920's. 57 page carbon typescript with music related holograph annotations in red ink. Rubber stamp of "Bibl. Scholasticus Prov. Oreg. S.J." 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Plain brown outer wrapper using brads. St. Michael's was a Jesuit mission founded in the mid 19th Century near Spokane to serve the Spokane Indian tribe. It was later relocated to another site near Spokane and underwent a number of functions before becommin a private parish in 1977. The compilation of Catholic and Christian hymns into English alphabet spelling tries to capture the phonetic sounds of the language of the Spokane Indians. It was done to bring uniformity in the teaching of the hymns at St. Michaels. A pronunciation guide is provided as is and index to the hymns. Both the Indian language and the English language titles of the hymns are listed in the index. For example: "Onward Christian Soldiers" translates into "Ilumiyyn Jesusak" and "Holy Queen We Bend" becomes "Kellim Anamta."
