Original autographed letter signed by Edward Blanchard. Circa 1860. 4 1/2 X 7 1/4. 2 pages. Blanchard (1820-1889() was a miscellaneous English writer, best known for his theater pantomimes. In this somewhat passionate letter to an unknown correspondent, he attempts to keep a relationship alive. Letter has a small hand stamp in the upper corner that reads, "Paris". Letter has been folded. Letter is clean.

3 Original Program - "Ruth St. Denis with Ted Shawn and The Denishawn Dancers"
No Binding Collectible-Very Good Brochure 
Original program featuring a performance by Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, and The Denishawn Dancers at Memorial Hall in Columbus, Ohio, Thursday evening on March 8th. No date, circa 1920s. 5 5/8" x 9 1/2." Six pages, complete. A small bit of tearing on the back edge and very slight rippling but very clean copy overall. Management by Daniel Mayer. Local management by William Wylie. Front cover has a black and white photograph of St. Denis seated in a pose and wearing an outfit inspired by Eastern culture (she appears to hold a lotus flower). The back cover features a black and white photograph of St. Denis, Shawn, and several Denishawn Dancers during a performance. Other black and white photographs of the performers are included as well as praise for St. Denis, Shawn, and their dance company. Ruth St. Denis (1879-1968) and Ted Shawn (1891-1972) were American pioneers of modern dance who founded the Denishawn School of Dance. St. Denis and Shawn were teachers of several notable performers such as Doris Humphrey, Lillian Powell, Evan-Burrows Fontaine, Charles Weidman, and Louise Brooks. A significant change in St. Denis's dance approach happened when she saw images of ancient Egypt and Eastern culture. The Denishawn School became known for its incorporation of Eastern philosophies and aesthetics and was the first dance academy to produce a professional dance company.

No Binding Collectible-Very Good Brochure 
Original program for a show featuring Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, the Denishawn Dancers, and an instrumental quartet at Memorial Hall in the evening of March 8th. No date, circa 1920s. 5 1/2" x 6 7/8." Eight pages. There is slight rippling. Clean copy overall. On the front cover is a black and white portrait of St. Denis wearing a dress and standing in a pose inspired by Eastern culture (original photograph was taken by Hungarian American photographer Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) who specialized in celebrity and theatrical portraiture). The program lists the following performers: Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, the Denishawn Dancers (Martha Graham, Pearl Wheeler, Betty May, Lenore Scheffer, Julia Bennett, May Lynn, Louise Brooks, Charles Weidman, and Robert Gorham), and the quartet (Louis Horst (Piano), J. Froling (Violin), Augusto Scalzi (Flute), and Peter Kleynenberg (Cello)). Also included is a list of performances in the show and advertisements by different dance and music companies. Ruth St. Denis (1879-1968) and Ted Shawn (1891-1972) were American pioneers of modern dance who founded the Denishawn School of Dance. 5 Original Publicity Photograph, "Olga (O.L.) Knipper-Chekhova

Circa 1904. Original black and white publicity photograph. 3 1/4 X 5 1/4 inches. Olga (O.L.) Knipper-Chekhova (1868-1959) was a Russian Empire and Soviet stage actress. In 1901 she married Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) who was a Russian dramatist and short story writer. In 1904 Olga played the part of Madame Raneuskaya in Chechov's "The Cherry Orchard". She would continue to play this part throughout her long career. In this publicity photograph, which has captions printed in French below the photograph, identifies Ms. Knipper and references her appearance as Ranevskaya ("Ranievskaia" on the photograph) in "The Cherry Orchard" ("Le Jardin des Cerises") as presented by the Moscow Art Theater. In this photograph Olga (approx 32 years of age) is sitting wearing a ruffled dress with a brooch. Two small holes are on the bottom of the photograph, (image and text is not affected). Several very small spots on photograph. Overall, photograph is clean.

Original stereocard on yellow board. No date, circa late 1800s to early 1900s. Board measures 6 7/8" x 3 1/2"; photograph measures 5 1/4" x 2 3/4." "New H Series." on left side of board. "Portraits of Celebrities" on right side of board. Photograph show a portrait Estelle Clayton in side profile with the left side of her face showing. She wears a bonnet, dress, earrings, and pearl necklace. "Clayton" listed on bottom of right half of photograph. A clean copy. Estelle Clayton (1867-1917) was an American stage actress, singer, dancer, and librettist. Although she was famous for her performing roles in comic operas, she wrote several librettos and was known for adapting novels and stories for stage performance. The photograph of Clayton in this stereograph was originally taken by New York photographer William R. Howell (1846-1890) whose subjects were often celebrities in the theater industry.

Original brown wrapper with gilt lettering on front cover. 6 X 9 inches. 19 pages. From the first page, "L. E. Behymer has the distinguished honor of presenting by arrangement with The Japanese-American Dram Society The First and Only Appearance in America of The Imperial Theatre Troupe of Tokio, Japan on their first international tour in "Ken-Geki" (The Drama Unusual). The foremost artists of Japan in the finest interpretation of Japanese Drama ever given". Also with this copy is a 4 page playbill telling about the Keylor Grand Theatre in Walla Walla, Washington. The playbill states the show starts Mitsuru Toyama (Japan's greatest dramatic actor) MME. Koharu Ohara (leading lady in the Imperial Theatre). It also states that the "Ken-Geki" is a two acts, six scenes play. Front cover of program is slightly soiled. Program has also been bent. Playbill has a small soiled spot on the upper corner. Pages are clean. Binding is tight.

Barnum. In 1863 he married Lavinia Warren (real name Mercy Lavinia Bump). The photograph, which dates from the time of the marriage, shows Mr. and Mrs. Thumb with the best man and bride's maid, standing facing the camera and wearing formal clothes.

It rests on the 2,500 foot plateau 28 miles from its port Santos allowing the city get away from the oppressive heat and humidity of the coast. Stunning brick structure known as the Municipal Theater is shown in the center of the photo with planted grounds and a wide boulevard below and in front of it. Quite nice image.

Broadside (5 1/2 x 11 3/4 inch) printed on one side. David Warfield (1866-1951) was an American character actor from San Francisco. The broadside is for 'The Music Master: A Comedy Drama in three Acts' which gave Warfield fame when he played the role of Herr Anton von Barwig in the successful Broadway production. Some folds and small tears along the edge of the broadside.
