Six black and white plates, complete. Raised bands and gilt lettering and decorations on spine. Beautiful multicolored and gilt marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Deckle edges. Pages have Grolier watermarks. Slight browning on pages; clean copy overall. Printed ownership label on front endpaper shows this book belonged to Claude M. Macdonald. Claude M. Macdonald (1852-1915) was a British soldier and diplomat who is best-known for his service in China and Japan. The letters contained in this book were written by Marguerite de Valois (1553-1615; also known as Margot), a French princess of the Valois Dynasty who later became Queen of Navarre and Queen of France. She married King Henry IV of France. The letters provide an inside look at the Court of France from 1565-1582.
