One of 1000 copies printed. Contemporary blue and black 3/4 leather binding with gilt decorative lines on front and back covers. No date, circa 1904. 6 1/4" x 9." 422 pages, complete. Seven black and white plates, complete. Raised bands and gilt lettering and decorations on spine. Beautiful multicolored and gilt marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Deckle edges. Pages have Grolier watermarks. Slight browning on pages; clean copy overall. Printed ownership label on front endpaper shows this book belonged to Claude M. Macdonald. Claude M. Macdonald (1852-1915) was a British soldier and diplomat who is best-known for his service in China and Japan. This book is a memoir written by French clergyman Jean-Francois Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de Retz (1613-1679). De Gondi was known for his conflicts with Cardinal Mazarin, both of whom were key figures during The Fronde (1648-1653), a series of civil wars in France.
