Signature on beige envelope by Charles Bertrand "M. Quad" Lewis in brown ink. Envelope adhered to beige paper with Royal Irish Linen, Marcus Ward & Co. watermark. No date, circa 1870s-1880s. Envelope measures 5 1/4" x 7 1/4"; paper measures 7 1/4" x 9 1/8." Envelope reads: "Very truly, M. Quad Lewis, Detroit Free Press. You didn't send card to write on." Paper, envelope, and signature are very clean and intact. Charles Bertrand Lewis (1842-1924), better known under the pen name, M. Quad, was an American journalist and humorist. Lewis began writing under the name, M. Quad, when he joined the Detroit Free Press 1869. During the Civil War, Lewis also served in the Sixth Michigan Volunteer Cavalry of the Union Army.
