An account of the "Radical Club" by the wife of the leader of the group, John Turner Sargent (1807-1877), Unitarian minister-at-large in the Boston area. His great interests were for the poor, women's suffrage & abolition of slavery, and especially 'freedom of the Pulpit' for which he resigned his post from in a dispute with the Unitarians. The club was formed to debate religion, science and culture from the liberal perspective. It is sometimes referred to as the 'second wave of the Transcendentalist movement'. Contributions by John Greenleaf Whittier, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Julia Ward Howe, Henry James, , W.H. Channing, F.H. Sanborn, Christopher Cranch, John Fiske, Oliver Wendell Holmes, etc. Very good copy.
