Two ALSs to Elsie Leslie at Mentone, California, 1904. One letter is 2 pages, the other one is 3 pages. William Winter (1836-1917) was the leading New York drama critic during the last four decades of the nineteenth century. These letters are written to his daughter-in-law Elsie Leslie (1881-1966). Ms Leslie is considered America's first child star because of her roles in two popular plays - 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' and 'The Prince and the Pauper (mid 1880s and mid 1890s). She was married to William Winter's son, William Jefferson Winter (1878-1929) from 1901 to 1918. She retired from the stage after playing a series of roles in 1919. In the first letter Winter writes about a surgical operation that William Jefferson Winter has recently undergone. He tells Elsie Leslie his opinion about the progress for Jefferson to return to the stage. He also informs Elsie that he will pay the medical bills. In the second letter William discusses a mutual acquaintance, George Arliss, (the actor) and what he and others family members have been up to. Both letters are signed with a private nickname he used with Leslie: "Old Ga". Very good copy.
