Photograph of Robert Dollar (1844-1932) 8 x 10 inch. Born in Scotland and began in the lumber business in Canada and expanding into shipping to export his products. Entering the shipping business in San Francisco in 1880, by 1901 he founded the Dollar Steamship Co. which became known for its transpacific liners bering the names of U.S. Presidents and became the largest shipowner in the U.S. An enemy of the unions, his inflammatory talk during the 1916 longshoreman strike in San Francisco came close to creating a vigilance committee. Published his MEMOIRS (1918) and was a model for the "Cappy Ricks" stories by San Francisco author Peter B. Kyne.
