Up Jumped the Devil (1941) is an African American film that features an all-black cast and was rare in its time. This is a comedic film that follows the antics of two criminals, Washington and Jefferson, who were just released from prison. Not wanting to be arrested for vagrancy, the two men find a job opportunity when a wealthy Mrs. Brown is looking to hire a butler and a maid. Jefferson (played by Shelton Brooks) convinces Washington (Mantan Moreland) to dress as a woman so they can both get the jobs. The pair then runs into Bad News Johnson, a criminal they met in prison, who wants all of them to pull a con on Mrs. Brown. Complications and hilarity ensue. Mantan Moreland (1902-1973) was an African American comedic actor who began his career in vaudeville and eventually found his way onto major film productions. Shelton Brooks (1886-1975) was an African American actor, pianist, and composer of popular music and jazz.
