A beautiful, original hand-colored engraving that shows the Grand Bassin Rond in the Tuileries Garden in Paris, France. People in formal attire are shown walking around the circular pond in a tree-lined plaza at the end of the Grande Allee. In 1564, the Tuileries Garden was built under the orders of Catherine de' Medici as the official garden of the Tuileries Palace. It opened to the public in 1667 and became a public park after the French Revolution. No date, circa 1760. Paper measures 18" x 11 1/4"; printed area measures 16" x 10 1/4." This print is also a "vue d'optique," which were very popular in the latter half of the eighteenth century and first half of the nineteenth century. Vue d'optique prints emphasized perspective in their compositions and produced an illusion of depth when viewed through a zograscope. Below the printed area is the title in both Latin and French and the following information: "49.e Vue d'Optique, Representant; A Paris chez Daumont, rue St.Martin." Jean-Francois Daumont (fl. 1740-c. 1775) was a French printer and publisher of vue d'optiques, popular prints, wallpaper, and playing cards. Print is very clean and intact with vibrant colors. Very minimal age-toning and a three pin-sized or thumbtack-sized holes at the top of the print (two are in the upper corners of the margins; one is at the very top of the printed area).
