Front free endpaper has an inscription written in black ink, dated to 1899, saying: "Isa A. We Pledge, July 4th, 1899, M. H. F., 'There's a time to laugh." Gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Top edge gilt. Red ribbon bookmark laid-in. Pages are very clean and intact. Covers and spine are very clean and intact overall. Small chip on fore-edge of back cover. Spine a little bit faded. One of the front pages says the following: "The mission of this book is not to mar the bloom of familiar sayings, but to measure, in a witty and humorous way, by varying lights and shades, their meaning and application."
