A clipped biographical newspaper article about the author is laid in the back. Artemus Ward is the pseudonym of Charles Farrar Browne (1834-1862). Browne was a writer, humorist, and is considered the first stand-up comedian in the United States. Browne was also apparently the favorite author of President Abraham Lincoln. Before Lincoln read the "Emancipation Proclamation" to his Cabinet, he read one of Browne's stories, High-Handed Outrage at Utica. Browne's on-stage character was "Artemus Ward," an incompetent man with "Yankee common sense." Melville D. Landon (1839-1910) was an American writer, humorist, journalist, and lecturer. Landon wrote under the pen name of "Eli Perkins." This edition is referenced in the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL) as no. 11212 under the "London" section. In another volume of BAL under the "Artemus Ward" section, only a reprint, the 1887 Dillingham imprint, is listed as no. 1361.
