Slight wear to the covers and textblock. Author is listed as "Josiah Allen's Wife (Marietta Holley)." Marietta Holley (1836-1926) was an American author and humorist. She used the pen name, "Josiah Allen's Wife," or sometimes, "Jemyma." Holley was known for her satire on society and politics in the United States. Her work was very popular in her time, and she has been compared to Mark Twain and Edgar Nye. Josiah Allen is the husband of one of Holley's recurring characters, Samantha Allen. Samantha and Josiah are an older couple who live in a rural part of the U.S. and the stories about the two often recount their misadventures as they venture into other parts of the U.S. unlike their own.
