The World Encompassed was first published in 1628 and was based on the notes of Francis Fletcher, a chaplain who accompanied Sir Francis Drake on his iconic voyage around the world. After gathering Fletcher's notes, Francis Drake, Drake's nephew of the same name, compiled them to make The World Encompassed. Contents are divided into three parts, "An Appreciation of Drake's Achievement," "'The World Encompassed by Sir Francis Drake' (Reprinted from the edition of 1628)," and "Selected Contemporary Documents Analogous to 'The World Encompassed by Sir Francis Drake." Under "An Appreciation": "Early years," "Early Voyages on the Atlantic," "The Nombre de Dios Expedition," "Service in Ireland," "The World Encompassed--The Voyage out to Port San Julian," "The Voyage home from Port San Julian," "Afterwards," "La Felicissima Armada," and "The last years."
