The fisherman in the foreground uses the region's iconic "butterfly" fishing net. In the background is the lake's main island, Isla de Janitzio. Janitzio's famous statue of Jose Maria Morelos is visible at the top. The Lake Patzcuaro basin encompasses a vast and diverse ecosystem that includes a number of different animal species. The basin's numerous wetlands support local and migrating species. Unfortunately, since the latter part of the twentieth century, the Patzcuaro basin has been beset by several issues including poverty of its residents and pollution of the watershed.
