The Treaty of Defensive Alliance (1755) between Great Britain and the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel. Signed under King George II of Great Britain (1683-1760) and Wilhelm VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (1682-1760) on June 18, 1755. This treaty affirmed that Hessian forces would protect Britain for monetary compensation should Britain come under attack. This treaty set the stage for Hessian mercenaries to come to the aid of Britain during the Seven Years' War. The Landgraves of Hesse-Kassel became famous for renting out their armies during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Seven Years' War was largely a victory for Britain and decimated France's status as a major land power.
