2 1/2 x 4 inches. George William Curtis (b. 1824, d. 1892) was a 19th century American author, political leader, journalist and lecturer. He was involved with the Transcendentalist Movement, was a member of the Brook Farm commune, helped found the Republican Party and was the author of several well-respected books. This bust photo, circa 1870, shows Curtis looking to his right, wearing a coat and bow tie, his hair parted in the middle and with mutton-chop sideburns. View more info

The title translates into English as "The Art of Living Rightly" and a former owner has written that in ink on the title page. Former owner's signature on front end paper. These essays originally appeared in Harper's Magazine in Curtis's column "Easy Chair" and are on (as the preface says) "vital questions of hygiene, courtesy and morality."
