Designed by Gottfried Semper in the style of Dresden Baroque and first built in 1841, it burnt down in 1861, was rebuilt again with the aid of Semper and was firebombed in 1945 by the US Air Force. Again rebuilt along the same lines as the Semper design after the war. Among the many premieres here were by Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner.
